Gitanas

Los gitanos están presentes en prácticamente todos los países de Europa. La teoría más aceptada es que llegaron de la India alrededor del s. XV, y desde entonces, se han esparcido por el continente y América. En Noruega, los gitanos son llamados “sigøy”, aunque los gitanos se llaman a sí mismos “rom”, palabra que significa hombre. Los gitanos a menudo viven al margen de la sociedad, se hallan fuera del mercado laboral (en Bergen se les ve vendiendo anillos de oro en la calle, entre otras actividades), y tienen su propio idioma (que varía de acuerdo al país: los gitanos de España hablan un idioma relacionado, pero distinto del que hablan los gitanos de Suecia o Noruega). Con siglos de estar en Europa, los gitanos siguen viviendo en una realidad paralela.

Gypsies are present in virtually every country in Europe. The most accepted theory states that they arrived from India around the 15th century, and since then have spread through the continent and on to America. In Norway, gypsies are called “sigøy” but the endonym is “rom”, a word that means “man”. Gypsies often live outside of the formal structures of society, are out of the job market (in Bergen you can see them selling golden rings, among other activities), and have their own language (which is different from country to country: gypsies in Spain speak a different -but related- language than the ones in Sweden or Norway). After centuries in Europe, gypsies still live in a parallel reality.
